A SENRA 5.30.07

Commissioned by the New York Association of Bergondo Immigrants, and sponsored by private investors and local government agencies in Galicia (Spain), a public monument to the Immigrants of Bergondo was designed by Martha Ruiz-Perilla and Marc Pérez.

In an opening ceremony attended by more than 1,300 guests, the memorial monument that will honor those who promoted the recovery of the land and building of "A Senra" was unveiled to the public. The guest list included residents of the Spanish Province of A Coruña, as well as donors and investors from other cities of Spain, the United States and South America.

Conceptually the monument focuses on the historical events that surrounded the construction, deterioration and recovery of this Galician educational center and the unceasing 70 years effort of a community to finalize the historical recovery of this valuable town landmark.

The building and the memorial monument (built by a local artist) were presented to the city residents in a ceremony that included city officials, as well as local and foreign representatives on April 28th, 2007.
