SONOMI KOBAYASHI (b. 1967)

Sonomi Kobayashi was born in Japan and moved to New York in 1993. She studied Painting and Sculpture at the Art Students League of New York. She lives in New York and works in her L.I.C., Queens's studio. Her work has been exhibited in the U.S. and Japan in venues such as the French-Japanese Contemporary Art Exhibition of Tokyo and Credit Suisse First Boston Headquarters. She is also a member of the Asian American Woman Artists Alliance. In her work Sonomi combines geometrical elements that convey the idea of space and marine environments. A concern with the nature of human race, its adaptability to change and its inherent search for survival, is conveyed through the use of these forms. Sonomi's abstract renderings interact harmoniously with the medium and support used, which range from acrylic on paper or oil on canvas to plaster sculptural installations. Sonomi loves cats, via email her nickname is Nekoloco.
