JOANNA KANE (b. 1960)
Born in New Jersey, Joanna received a BFA in Painting from Kansas City Art Institute. Joanna has worked professionally since 1985, and has exhibited her work in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Nantucket, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York, as well as In Sweden and Canada. Since 1992 the press has reviewed her work and artistic accomplishments. Joanna's abstract paintings are fueled with earthy colors and geometric forms that evoke deserted landscapes. The terraqueous appearance of these works is in part due to the use of Milk paint as a medium, applied onto wood board. Milk paint is a natural hand-mixed powder pigment that provides a very tough long-lasting paint, and was used in colonial times for furniture and in faux marble techniques. While the colors in this medium can be very limited, Joanna has further developed the technique combining it with other media, and creating a myriad of colors that is revealed in her works. These works are about the object of art, its creation and evolution. Under a delicate varnish finish, the process and rough medium are put together and then revealed by the artist for the observer's appreciation. Joanna has lived in Nantucket Island since 1983.
